An Introduction To The Unrest Scale

What are the Protest Risk Scale and the Violent Unrest Risk Scale?

The Protest Risk Scale shows the likelihood of a community experiencing protest (including peaceful protest and violent unrest). Communities marked in blue (scale close to 0) have a low likelihood of protest and communities marked in red (scale close to 1) have a high likelihood of protest.

The Violent Unrest Risk Scale shows the likelihood of a protest in an area being violent, if protest occurs. Communities marked in blue (scale close to 0) have a low likelihood of violent unrest and communities marked in red (scale close to 1) have a high likelihood of violent unrest.

What are the main insights from the Unrest Scale study?

The study shows that protest and unrest relate statistically to the socio-economic conditions in communities where they occur. Socio-economic information from the census can explain 80% of community-based unrest.

The analysis shows that violent unrest is not simply an escalation of peaceful protest. Peaceful protest and violent unrest occur in communities with different socio-economic characteristics.
